For nearly 20 years, Dr. Sonel Y. Shropshire has been one of the most recognizable and influential people in higher education. Having conducted over 600 workshops, he is widely acclaimed for his methods of creating effective diversity recruitment strategies for academic institutions. As President of The Academic Network, Inc., he has developed strategic platforms for faculty, staff and students for over 428 institutions. Among his many clients are some of the most prestigious academic institutions in the country, including the University of Illinois, Cornell University, Harvard University, Indiana State University, UCLA, University of Iowa, Binghamton University, Stanford, University of Virginia, Syracuse University, University of Pennsylvania and others.
In December 2006, he created the Minority Faculty Applicant Database (MFAD), a higher education applicant locator service which has worked with over 3,100 colleges and universities. After his tenure at Washington College as a recruiter, Shropshire received his Juris Doctor from the University of Florida College of Law in 1997. There he became the entire university’s Director of Graduate Minority Recruitment. As liaison to the University President, he was instrumental in developing the diversity strategic plan for the university’s 135 departments and 31 colleges.
Shropshire has served as Assistant Dean for several nationally ranked institutions including University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), Loyola Marymount University (CA), Texas Wesleyan University and Stetson University. He has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations, including the White House HBCU Initiative, National Association of Graduate Admissions Professionals (NAGAP), Law School Admissions Council (LSAC), American Association of Community Colleges, Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, American Bar Association’s Presidential Council on Diversity, California Science Center Governor's Advisory Board and Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education.
